Web/Mobile App Critique
Web/Mobile App Critique
The application that I chose for the discussion this week was Sleeper. Sleeper is an application that is mostly used for fantasy sports, such as football, basketball, baseball and hockey. This app continues to expand further into the realm of entertainment, recently diving into the Esports field (Ulrich, 2022). Sleeper is available through the web and as a mobile application, making it extremely easy and convenient to access no matter where you are. Along with offering different fantasy sports formats sleeper uses real time functionality to give its user up to date scores and transactions as they happen.
Sports gambling has gotten incredibly popular over the years. Because of this, Sleeper has adopted various ways in its app to help its users participate in gambling ventures. Users can place bets on individual players and teams hitting over/unders. Users can also enter into weekly contests like NFL Survivor where you select a a specific team each week. If that team wins you advance in the bracket. If that team loses, then you are eliminated from the competition (Sleeper HQ, 2024). For people looking stay more in the realm of fantasy sports to satisfy their betting needs Daily Draft is another popular betting mode Sleeper offers. All it takes is $1 to enter into a Daily draft competition. In the Daily Draft mode you participate in a 5 minute 8 round draft with 7 other users at the end of the week the users with the highest scoring lineups win a payouts of $1, 2, and $4. You also have the option to enter your drafted lineup into bonus competitions at the end of the week to earn higher payouts (Sleeper HQ, 2024) .
I've been the commissioner of a fantasy football league that has been running for well over 10 years. I switched my league over to sleeper a few years ago and have not regretted my decision! The UI is very user friendly. The text and icons in the navigation bars in both the web app and mobile app are simple, making it easy to navigate around your fantasy league, check news, and enter into competitions at a simple tap of a finger. The chime alerts and notifications are fast and effectively communicate messages to users. Finally this app makes communicating to league mates fast and simple with the chat box conveniently at the side of the screen for web users and on the bottom for mobile users.
As I mentioned I have been thoroughly impressed with the Sleeper. So, it was kind of hard for me to come up with ideas to improve it. However, the first idea I came up with was more options to customize fantasy leagues. From my experience league mates are always drawing up new ideas to enhance rules and payouts my league. The app's league customization feature does not offer too much outside of basic functions, which makes it entirely too hard any new idea.
The second way I feel this app could be improved could be by implementing a trade analyzer in leagues. This could help both new and veteran fantasy players develop fairer trades in leagues.
The third way this app could be improved could be by expanding the draft screen on the mobile app to show players that have already been taken. For league mates that are drafting their teams through their cellphones this could eliminate the need for more research and allow them to confidently select players without having to worry about the draft timer.
I have placed both screen shots one from the Sleeper Picks interface and the other is from a Fantasy Football league interface in PDF form down below.
